Michael Eavis, presenting awards to volunteers at Mendip Community Support's Fair at Wells Museum on 6 June, said that this country relies heavily on volunteers and would grind to a halt without their dedication and efforts.

Anne Minns who volunteers with Oxfam and Amnesty International for many years was named as Mendip Volunteer of the Year. Anne has done 2 shifts a week at Oxfam's Wells shop for the last 18 years. At the same time she is a dedicated and proactive member of Amnesty. Still playing her part in all weathers and at all their fundraising events, Anne also co-ordinates the group's letter writing campaigns. Allan Jamieson , Secretary of the Wells, branch said 'Anne richly deserves this award for her commitment and hard work over the years and for being a truly inspirational figure.'

Liz Shepherd, Secretary of Frome Youth Council for the last year, was named as Mendip Young Volunteer of the Year. Her involvement in the campaign for a youth cafe in Frome resulted in an appearance on ITV West news. Liz was also part of the group that organised the recent "Rhythm for Life" event at the Cheese and Grain.

She's now been invited onto a working group developing the Youth Cafe and to be part of the committee organising the town's Christmas Spectacular. Azeema Caffoor, coordinator of Frome Active, said 'Everyone at Frome College sends congratulations and thanks to Liz for her excellent contribution.'

Organisations large and small from across Mendip set up displays to raise awareness of their work and attract new volunteers. Musetta Lench, Mendip Community Support's Supported Volunteering Co-ordinator, was on hand to explain the benefits of volunteering and offer help to those interested in getting started.

Commented Musetta: 'A mum whose children start school in September wants to learn new skills and boost her confidence to help her find employment. Someone approaching retirement wants to put his skills and experience to use in the voluntary sector. A young student wants to boost her CV so she stands out from the crowd when she starts applying for jobs. We can help all these people find suitable opportunities and start making a difference in their communities.'
